Padang, (Antara Sumbar) - The West Sumatra government targets 212,145 tons fish production by 2018 or an increase of 2,516 tons from the previous year.

Head of the Office of Marine and Fishery of West Sumatra, Yosmeri in Padang, Monday said the production of capture fisheries in 2018 is spreading out in seven areas, namely Mentawai 3,270 tons, South Peisisir 33.721 tons, and Padangpariaman 45,053 tons.

Then, Agam District 7,148 tons, West Pasaman 92,717 tons, Padang Municipality 21,733 tons, and Pariaman Municipality 8,500 tons.

According to him, if the capture fishery production target is reached, then the value obtained from 212.145 tons of capture fisheries reached Rp3.738 billion.

Then he mentioned for West Sumatra fishery production which has 2,420,357 kilometers of coastline in general every year has fulfilled the target.

Yosmeri said that the capture fisheries production from the 186,580 square kilometers of sea area in 2015 reaches 204,770 tons and 2016 productions of 206.948 tons.

To support the production of capture fisheries, his side provides assistance such as the provision of boats along with the completeness of fishing gear in cooperation with the cooperative fishermen of West Sumatra.

In addition, he said to improve the welfare of community by providing fishing insurance and establishing a public service agency.

It also increases the knowledge of fishermen through training so that they can master information technology to support the sale of the catch via the internet.

"Fishermen in West Sumatra have also been using fuel from three kilograms of gas as a substitute for diesel to operate the vessel," he said.

He hopes that the potential of these catch fish can improve the welfare of fishermen and coastal communities.

Earlier, Vice Chairman of Commission IV of the House of Representatives, Herman Khaeron said the potential of Indonesia's natural resources is a great asset that can improve the welfare of fishing communities.

"The government and the Parliament have a duty to realize the welfare through policies that do not burden the fishermen and provide assistance evenly," he added. (cha)
