President Visits Banten To Review Construction of Karian Dam

Rangkasbitung, Banten, (Antara Sumbar) - President Joko Widodo paid a work visit to Banten Province to review the construction of the Karian Multipurpose Dam.

"After reviewing the Karian Dam, the president will hold a meeting with all village heads of Banten Province in Muruy Village, Pandeglang District, Banten Province," Bey Machmudin, deputy for protocol, press, and media of the Presidential Secretariat, said in a press statement received here on Wednesday (Oct 4).

President Widodo along with First Lady Iriana departed from Bogor Palace at around 7 a.m. local time.

Based on a statement released by Daelim, Korea's construction and petrochemical company, this project is being implemented through the Economic Development Cooperation Fund supported by the Korean government for its Indonesian counterpart.

Daelim will implement the project along with Wijaya Karya and Waskita Karya, Indonesia's state construction companies.

The Karian Multipurpose Dam is a project being implemented under the directive of the Indonesian government to solve the water shortage problem caused by rapid urbanization and to prevent damages due to floods and droughts.

The dam is being built on the tributary of Ciujung River, 70 kilometers southwest of Jakarta. The dam will measure 516 meters in width and 63 meters in height, and it can store up to 300 million tons of water.

It will be constructed in a period of 48 months, and once the work on the dam is completed, it is expected to supply water to adequately meet the agricultural, municipal, and industrial needs of the capital city of Jakarta and neighboring areas.

The head of state will plant corn and distribute land certificates to the residents in Pandeglang District, Banten.

The president and his entourage will stay for a night in Serang District.

The president is scheduled to attend the 72nd anniversary of the Indonesian military at the Indah Kiat Port, the city of Cilegon, Banten.

According to Antara's observation, the president arrived at the Karian Dam's site at 10:15 a.m. local time.

Officer of the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry provided information about the dam to President Widodo.

Several officials who accompanied the president during a visit to the Karian Dam include Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono and Presidential Chief of Staff Teten Masduki. (*)
