Indonesia Right In Main Infrastructure Development, Rector Said

Padang, W Sumatra, Nov 19 (Antara) - An expert has said the government is right in its policy giving priority to infrastructure development.

"The availability of facilities and infrastructure would motivate human resources to move and the impact is the economy would revive," Rector of the state run Andalas University of Padang, Prof Tafdil Husni said here on Sunday.

He said the result of the massive implementation of road infrastructure projects would contribute to fairer distribution of economic gain, and mobilize the people.

He cited the trans Sumatra toll road now under construction would facilitate the flows of good and services, and areas so far isolated, backward would have the opportunity to grow and have a touch of modernity.

Construction of new airports and expansion and modernization of airports would facilitate transport of goods and services, and contribute to international relations he said.

"Acceleration of technological infrastructure is also necessary in facing the digital tsunami," he said, adding in many other countries technology is dominant in almost human activities.

He cited in the United States and Japan , life is easier with technology, which gives room for people to develop other creativity and applications.

"Nothing is wrong with the government policy of reallocating fund from one program to other investment program," he said apparently he referred to the cut in subsidy to increase investment in infrastructure projects.

By investing in productive sector there is gain to be expected, he said. adding "this will need the same perception among all involved."

Critics have blamed massive infrastructure projects of the government for "growing poverty and weak purchasing power of the people." saying that fund for subsidies have been used for infrastructure projects. (*)
