Simpang Empat, (Antara Sumbar) - Floods hit Nagari Batahan Village, Ranah Batahan Sub-district, in West Pasaman District, West Sumata Province, and damaged 13 houses on Monday (Oct 9).

Relief aid was distributed to help the flood victims, Try Wahluyo, head of the West Pasaman disaster mitigation office, noted here, Monday.

Several rescuers were deployed to help move the flood victims to higher ground, he said.

The Batahan River overflowed its bank and triggered the flooding following incessant heavy rains since Sunday (Oct 8).

Several houses and rice fields were inundated, with floodwaters reaching a height of one meter.

The flood victims, whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the floods, were accommodated in emergency tents.

Meanwhile, in Cilacap District, Central Java Province, heavy downpour had triggered flooding on Saturday, according to Teguh Wardoyo, head of the Cilacap meteorology, climatology, and geophysics office.

"According to the daily measurement of precipitation at the Cilacap meteorology station, at 7 a.m. local time, 171.6 millimeters of rainfall was received, which is categorized as heavy, as it is above 150 millimeters per day," he noted.

The Tunggul Wulung Airport, Jeruklegi Sub-district, Cilacap District, received 298 millimeters of rainfall on Saturday morning.

Heavy rains have caused flooding in the villages of Kawunganten and Kalijeruk in Kawunganten Sub-district; the Ketapang residential area, Sutomo Street, and Kendeng Street in Cilacap Town; and a part of the South Cilacap Sub-district.

Wardoyo has called on the local inhabitants to remain vigilant to the possibility of flooding, as Cilacap is currently experiencing rainy season.

The Cilacap disaster mitigation officers have distributed relief aid and helped to move several flood victims to higher ground using rubber boats. (*)
