250 Embroidery Craftsmen Show The Leading Products in Bukittinggi Tourism Object

Bukittinggi, (Antara Sumbar) - A total of 250 embroidery craftsmen in Bukittinggi Municipality, West Sumatra, showcased the process of making embroidery products as region's leading handicraft since 2007 in the tourism object of Jam Gadang on Friday (Oct 6).

Head of the local Office of Cooperatives, UKM and Trade, M Idris in Bukittinggi said that the show featuring embroidery design for mukena and clothing is a series of events to enliven the 233th anniversary of Bukittinggi.

He explained the activity as well as a means of evaluation in relation to in which the results obtained after encouragement and coaching from the government for the community.

He said, ten years ago, the local government asked 300 residents to develop the ability to make embroidery design and product innovation.

At this time, the number of craftsmen built has grown to more than 2,000 embroidery craftsmen.

Chairman of local National Crafts Council (Dekranasda), Yesi Endriani expects the event can encourage the development of embroidery products and craftsmen.

It was at once step towards in realizing Bukittinggi as Muslim fashion center.

One of the craftsmen, Dewi said she got the training in embroidery through Campago Ipuah Village and takes a week to learn.

"We already have a shop in Banto Market and now it is built by the Department of Cooperatives, SMEs and Trade," she said.

Mostly, she sells embroidered products for mukena, tablecloths and clothing bought by local and foreign tourists, especially from Malaysia. (cha)
