Medan, (Antara Sumbar) - State-owned port operator Pelindo 1 said it is busy modernizing its largest port of Belawan to improve performance and services .

Pelindo I is optimizing the potential of its main port Belawan in Medan, North Sumatra, the largest and busiest port in Sumatra, its chief executive Bambang Eka Cahyana said here on Thursday (Sept 28).

Bambang said construction of Dedicated Terminal, which serves as crude palm oil (CPO) inter-island terminal and car terminal in the port of Belawan.

"Construction of the port is to expand the loading and unloading capacity for CPO to 1.8 million tons per year," he said.

He said construction of the car terminal is to facilitate unloading of hundreds of cars from Jakarta every month.

Pelindo has also built cold storage for horticulture products to keep them fresh before being exported, he said.

"The cold storage is built in Horticulture Terminal expected to cut logistic cost for horticulture products of the farmers in North Sumatra," he said.

He said Pelindo 1 also has expanded multipurpose terminal in Belawan including dry bulk terminal with a capacity of 1 million tons, General Cargo Terminal, and pier for Base Chemical Industry.

With the facilities , the port would increase its productivity and smoother loading and unloading and flows of goods both dry bulk and general cargoes, he said.

"Renovation of the passenger terminals also is a focus in the program of Pelindo to give greater convenience of the users of sea transport," he added.

He said Pelindo has already officiated the operation of Bandar Deli Terminal which could accommodate 2,500 people . The terminal operational in June, 2016 is now the third largest terminal for sea passengers in Indonesia.

It is equipped with modern facilities such as boarding bridge that would make it easier for passengers to board and leave the ship, automatic gate, guest house, playing ground for children and other supporting facilities.

Pelindo also has repaired and paved access road to the ports with concrete, Bambang said. (*)
